Edmund Optics Transitions Akita and Mainz Manufacturing Sites to 100% Renewable Energy

Milestone marks a major step in the company’s global sustainability efforts

3/20/2025, Barrington, NJ USA   —

Edmund Optics (EO), a leading supplier of optical components, assemblies, and solutions, is proud to announce that its Akita, Japan and Mainz, Germany manufacturing sites now operate on 100% renewable energy. This transition significantly advances EO’s commitment to reducing global emissions and fostering sustainable operations. The Akita site specializes in manufacturing and coating precision optics, focusing on spherical lenses and optical filters, while the Mainz site focuses on manufacturing polarizers and processing Schott color glass, with both playing a crucial role in Edmund Optics’ manufacturing structure.

By transitioning to a more sustainable energy source, the Akita and Mainz manufacturing sites have successfully reduced EO’s indirect greenhouse gas emissions from purchased electricity by an impressive 25%. Eliminating reliance on fossil-fuel-based energy has allowed EO to make a meaningful impact on its global emissions footprint, further strengthening its commitment to sustainability.

“This is an incredible milestone for our team,” said Jeff Harvey, Chief Innovation Officer at Edmund Optics. “It demonstrates our commitment to sustainable manufacturing, but we know there’s more to do. Transitioning to renewable energy is just one piece of the puzzle—we remain focused on reducing overall energy consumption across our operations.”

EO continues to advance its commitment to energy efficiency and renewable energy across its global manufacturing sites. At the Akita facility in Japan, the site is now powered entirely by hydroelectric energy, following efficiency improvements such as upgrading to LED lighting. In Mainz, approximately 30% of the facility’s electricity comes from existing solar panels, while the remaining 70% is now sourced through a green energy tariff. By prioritizing sustainable energy solutions, EO aims to contribute proactively to industry-wide efforts in reducing environmental impact and hopes to inspire others to adopt similar initiatives. The company remains dedicated to exploring innovative ways to enhance sustainability while maintaining manufacturing excellence.
