Laser Induced Damage Threshold - Not a Simple Solution

With higher-power lasers, laser-induced damage threshold and lifetime testing become more important for laser optics specification. Edmund Optics developed an in-house laser damage test bench to investigate the limitations of the current ISO 21254 version and participate in the development of an improved standard. In this presentation, we discuss how to proceed from specifying one value on a datasheet to defining a test that provides reproducible understand of high-power laser reliability.

UV Degradation - Optics versus Environment

Propogation loses of UV lasers and scattering of ultraviolet light contribute significantly to the degradation of optical components. Although this phenomenon is well known, the mechanism of why and how it happens are still under study. In Edmund Optics we are working on minimizing UV degradation by understanding these mechanisms better and reducing the outgassing coming from the entire optical system.
